The urban population constitutes 50.8 per cent of the total amount of people, while the other 49.2 per cent live in the rural areas. Males cover 50.7 percent of the population, while females are 49.3 percent of it. The population growth rate is 0.1 percent.
People from Baracoa have a health care network that covers the whole municipality and 81 facilities: a General Teaching Hospital, 4 polyclinics, two maternity homes, a ward for nephrotic patients, 4 dental clinics and several dentist’s chairs, physical rehabilitation wards, family medical centers as well as medical emergency services, intensive care for children and adults, among others.
Four hundred and one professionals are employed in the health sector, including 221 family doctors and 85 dentists. The municipality has 204 inhabitants per physician and 963 per dentist.
In Baracoa there are 154 educational centers which cover all educational levels: primary, secondary, pre-university, technical, professional and special, along with four university sites. The teaching staff amounts to 706 thousand workers who teach 17 641 students, which means that there is one teacher per 11 students and every 48 inhabitants.
The mountains rehabilitation program, known as Plan Turquino, has made possible taking to the mountains the personal and basic services, as well as procedures such as the Registers of consumers, Workers´ Registers, Fine offices, Banks, Identity Card offices and others services.
